SAME-SEX MARRIAGE: LOSING THE BATTLE AND THE WAR

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in favor of same-sex marriage, but it likely will not end the strife or wrangling that this issue has inflamed. Although public opinion has accelerated in favor of same-sex marriage (50% of Americans favor it, up from 39% in 2008, according to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life), staunch opponents remain entrenched.

A bigger question emerges from this conflict: When Christians publicly denounce homosexuality and its practitioners, are we faithfully representing Jesus? Would Jesus be compelled to appear on FOX News or Bill O’Reilly’s show to oppose same-sex marriage? Continue reading →

STRATEGIES FOR CHANGING CULTURE

In his book, To Change the World, James Davison Hunter asserts that many Christians have adopted a false theory for social change, believing that the majority belief determines the social norm. Therefore, change occurs when a majority adopts a belief that differs from the existing norm. The LaBrosse-Levinson Distinguished Professor of Religion, Culture, and Social Theory at the University of Virginia argues that this faulty theory has led Christians to invest a large amount of energy in resources and strategies to effect cultural change that prove ineffective. MARRIAGE

For the discussion of marriage, the bodily union of two people is necessary and that union should follow the natural order. In the created order, marriage is distinguished by a relationship between two people who have committed themselves to the process of becoming one flesh. The unique features of the male and female bodies provide a natural sexual union that is violated when two members of the same gender engage in sexuality. Continue reading →

THE GOOD NEWS BRUTALIZED

We cannot deny that wrath belongs to the character of God. By His nature, God must be opposed to everything that opposes His goodness. It is certainly true that God hates sin.

When we arrive in the New Testament, God demonstrates His love and grace through the death and resurrection of His Son so powerfully that God’s wrath plays only a supporting role in the gospel message. The wrath of God in the punishment of sin still occupies the message. In fact, through the death of His Son, God shows that He cannot compromise His wrath and that it obligates Him to punish all sin. Jesus was sinless, but he willingly took the sins of men upon Himself and entered the heavenly courtroom for judgment and execution. Continue reading →
