JUDGING HYPOCRISY

People just cannot resist misquoting the Bible in order to support their positions. The MSNBC host of Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough, fell prey to this temptation recently. While interviewing Tavis Smiley and Cornell West, two prominent African-Americans, Scarborough took a swipe at political conservatives for their religious hypocrisy.

In the interview with his guests on “Poverty in America,” Scarborough accused conservatives, who consistently refer to religion in their message, of missing the core of Jesus’ message. To support his critique, he referred to a section of Jesus’ Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24-25. Continue reading

SEX AND THE BIBLE

Another book will populate the shelves this month that calls into question the traditional interpretation of biblical passages on sexuality. Jennifer Wright Knust, professor of religion at Boston University and ordained minister in the American Baptist Churches USA, points to “the contradictory nature of the biblical witness” with regard to sexual morals.

Touted as a Bible scholar, Knust’s book, Unprotected Texts: The Bible’s Surprising Contradictions About Sex and Desire, carries weighty authority. She has studied the texts extensively, researching history, language and customs in her quest to refute what she considers an irresponsible and dogmatic use of the Bible in political issues of sexuality. THE BIBLE AND GAY MARRIAGE

Wait a minute, John Meacham. You argue that “the religious case for gay marriage is a strong one,” appealing to “Western monotheistic traditions [that] hold that human beings are made in the likeness and image of God, and are thus all equal in the sight of the Lord.” In the next paragraph you dismiss “those who assert biblical authority in support of traditional definitions of marriage” because “Scripture is not inerrant [without error]. ”Maybe you don’t realize that the basis for believing that all human beings bear the likeness and image of God derives from the biblical account of creation in Genesis 1-2.
