“I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN”

American women may “go totally crazy” with Shania Twain and sing, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” celebrating female prerogative and pleasure, but the majority of women in the world may consider their gender a chromosomal curse.

Veteran political journalist, Nicholas Kristof, and his journalist wife, Sheryl WuDunn, were living in China and reporting for the New York Times on events surrounding the revolution of 1989, when they discovered disturbing facts that had not emerged in the media. China’s preference for boys was resulting in the disappearance of 39,000 girls every year. Continue reading →

CHEERS v TEARS

The trial lasted only 10 days. The jury deliberated only 21 hours over two days. The sexual abuse (that was prosecuted) covered 15 years.

The jury convicted Sandusky on 45 of the 48 counts of child sexual abuse. Prosecutors identified 10 boys who were victimized by Sandusky (although many believe there were more).

Judge Freeh denounced the concealment by four top Penn State officials. The crowd outside the courtroom cheered at the announcement of the conviction. The streets and quads on Penn State campus were quiet. Victim 6 wept. Continue reading →

WHEN LOVE IS ABSENT

In moral terms, bullying must qualify as conduct contrary to love. Conduct contrary to love must be defined as a form of hate. Hate crime laws do not go far enough, because they restrict the definition to a few protected classes. Any action aimed to hurt another person physically or emotionally describes an act of hate.

Justice defines the penalties for violations of the laws formally enacted by legislation. If no law exists, no penalty can be exacted. Anti-bullying legislation moves closer towards the moral principle established by the Old Testament and reiterated by Jesus, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” All behavior should be judged by this immutable and comprehensive principle of love. JUSTICE WILL BE DONE

Sunday, May 1, following months of extensive intelligence work on a lead, a U.S. Navy Seals special ops team assaulted a mansion where bin Laden was living, killing him and four other people. Many believed he had been hiding in the rugged terrain in Pakistan’s western region near the border of Afghanistan. Instead, he was occupying a luxurious residence in the resort city of Abbottabad, home to over 500,000 people and just 30 miles north of Pakistan’s capital.

Former president, George W. Bush, issued a statement, “The fight against terror goes on, but tonight, America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done.” Continue reading →
